The Murcia premieres the river walk ´Murcia Río´ and the City Council is already facing Phase II of this transformation project (24/07/2019)

José Ballesta attends the opening of this new social and meeting point next to Segura, which stretches along 22,000 m2 and backs up the set of performances and parks of 'Murcia Río'.

Phase II of 'Murcia Río' is already underway and will be extended along 14 districts and 27 km of riverbed, creating large metropolitan parks and family areas.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, and members of the Municipal Corporation, has attended today the opening of the river promenade 'Murcia Río', a new reference space for Murcia, which extends over 22,000 m2 and is the culmination of Phase I of this transformation project, which has made Segura a meeting and union point.

This afternoon, with a summer cinema session, the part closest to the Malecon car park will open.

“Murcia Río is the largest river and leisure park in the municipality.

The opening of this river walk, which backs up and connects the set of performances and gardens already completed in these four years, is the culmination of a city project that has meant the integration of Segura as the great structuring element of the Huerta de Murcia with the urban center, â€said José Ballesta, who added that“ we will continue and Phase II of 'Murcia Río' is underway, which we will extend along 14 districts and 27 km of riverbed, creating large parks metropolitan and family areas. â€

“This river walk is a direct entrance of the city to the Huerta, which gives continuity to the pedestrian axis of about 100,000m2 pedestrians, from the river, to La Glorieta, passing through the historic center and its culmination in the new Alfonso Pedestrianized Avenue X The Wise, â€said the mayor.

This itinerary that opens today connects the Manterola footbridge with the new green area of the Alameda del Malecón, on the other side of the highway, on a pedestrian promenade with a large access portico, which 'looks out' to Segura and offers a vision Direct on its channel, creating an alternative route to the Malecon, with lighting, green areas with native vegetation and riverside, living areas, a square-viewpoint and segregated bike path.

The set of actions of Murcia Río I already completed add more than 50,000m2 of new public spaces between the new river walk, the right mota, the Alameda del Malecón and the garden of the Four Stones.

A large meadow overlooking the river and a new speck

This urbanized promenade that goes from Manterola to the back area of the Murcia Parque pool - where a garden with palm trees has been created - culminates in an area with a large living area with a large meadow that connects with the two large gardens of Murcia River: the Alameda del Malecón and the Four Stones, through the pedestrian and cyclist path next to the Segura riverbed.

In this way, “the urban and the natural, the city and the Huerta, intermingle and create an itinerary of transition, open and healthy with which the Murcians look again at our river, the backbone that gave rise to our municipality â€, Said the mayor.

In addition, the project recovers naturalization and accessibility to the river bank, creating a platform at the level of the water level, that is, a speck on the left bank that allows the walk along the river.

The works have involved the planting of 15,000 shrubs and more than 500 trees.

'Smartization' for saving water and energy

The entire development of the project has a component of 'smartization', integrating the application of new technologies to sustainability, with an improvement in water use and efficient energy consumption through telematic control systems, within the smart city project 'MiMurcia'.

The works have involved an investment of 2.2 million and have had an execution period of one year.

This project, of high social profitability, has been financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund in the Framework of the Strategy for Sustainable Urban Development of Murcia.

Murcia River II

Murcia Río II is already underway and will build Murcia and its districts, from La Contraparada to its exit from the municipality through Alquerías, thus encompassing 27 km of riverbed and about 1 million m2, on an area that will have more than 2,000 trees and 10,500 riverside shrubs.

There will be two metropolitan parks next to Barriomar and La Fica, and new walkways and bridges will facilitate the connection of neighbors on both sides of the river.

The recovery of the meanders will open new green spaces and familiar areas for the neighbors of the districts of La Ñora, Puebla de Soto, La Raya, Rincón de Beniscornia and Rincón de Seca, in the west zone;

as well as those around Torreagüera, Llano de Brujas, Santa Cruz, El Raal, Alquerías and Los Ramos, in the east.

A large head park in La Contraparada, between the districts of Javalí Nuevo and Javalí Viejo, will open as an interactive museum of the river and the Huerta, combining tradition and avant-garde.
