More than € 70,000 granted to the UMU to develop outreach projects (22/07/2019)

The Unit of Scientific Culture and Innovation of the University of Murcia (UCC + i of the UMU) gets more than € 70,000 to develop four dissemination projects.

The winning ideas range from promoting scientific vocations, to inclusive archeology or surprising science hidden in the streets of Murcia.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, to which the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology belongs (FECYT), supports and recognizes with this money the trajectory of the UCC + i of the UMU that has been working for a decade for society in general, know and participate actively in science.

Since then, there have been thousands of dissemination actions carried out with the aim of highlighting the role played by science and technology in social welfare, communicating the researchers' findings, encouraging scientific vocations and innovative talent, promoting research in the new generations, train and advise new disseminators and, in short, present science as a natural part of culture.

The FECYT supports the scientific dissemination carried out in the UMU

Each year, FECYT selects the best proposals from Spanish organizations of all types (from universities to companies) to finance science outreach and communication projects that bring research, technology and innovation closer to citizens.

In this call, there are five projects that will be financed by the UMU.

The first aid will be destined to the consolidation of the UCC + i, to which they have granted financing for the execution of the different multidisciplinary activities that it programs annually.

With this support, UCC ConCIENCIA will propose to the general public competitions of youtubers, photography and mathematics, exhibitions, cinephorums, theatrical performances, days of comics or scientific talks, among others.

In addition, the FECYT again supports the Masterchem project, a contest that has revolutionized this year the educational centers of the Region of Murcia with chemistry.

Students between 6 and 18 years old have to show that they are the best amateur chemists in the Region through creativity.

Simulating the successful culinary program, it seeks to eliminate chemophobia from society and encourage the creation of scientific vocations among the participants, who will experience at first hand the magic and emotion that hides the creation and work of chemistry.

Another of the funded projects will be Science around the corner that unites cultural emotion, tourism resources and the most advanced gamification techniques to build a different experience around science.

Local resources, popular culture and scientific history will flourish in the city of Murcia with the help of new technologies.

Also, with Archeology and Intellectual Disability: unearthing prejudices will work on inclusive dissemination.

The purpose is to awaken the scientific vocations of citizens with intellectual disabilities through on-site experiences in the important paleolithic site, that of the Cueva del Arco (Cieza, Murcia), and recreations of archaeological excavations and workshops.

This initiative will bring archeology and the study of our origins to a group that, generally, is left out of scientific advances.

Finally, they have also granted the UMU a support for scientific workshops for hospitalized children and minors at risk of exclusion.
