The farmers of the municipality will have from the next month of September of a tractor and a shredder of pruning to promote the sustainable rural development and reduce the agricultural burning, thanks to an agreement between the City council and Agrarian Association of Young Farmers of the Region of Murcia (ASAJA).

This was announced today by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Kitchen Garden, Antonio Navarro, and the General Secretary of the Agricultural Association of Young Farmers of the Region of Murcia, Alfonso Gálvez Caravaca.

The aim is for small farmers to crush the pruning remains instead of burning them, thus reducing the climatic impacts produced by the burning of pruning remains and replacing current practices with others that are more sustainable and beneficial for the climate.

The huerta of Murcia is characterized by small exploitations and for its owners it is not viable economically the acquisition of machinery and different tools to manage their exploitation.

With the implementation of this agreement, Asaja acquires machinery for the crushing of firewood giving service to these farmers.

The environmental benefits of pruning trituration, instead of burning stubble, consist in the reduction of atmospheric pollution, decreasing the contribution of CO2 to the atmosphere and the greenhouse effect, improving soil fertility, increasing the capacity of water retention in the soil, soil organic matter and landscape conservation and the reduction of erosion and desertification.

The Department of Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Garden assumed with this agreement the expenses of acquisition of the pruning and auxiliary crushing machinery, as well as the tractor to move it.

For the annuity of 2019, a contribution of 20,000 euros has been given to the association.

Protocol of actions

In addition, between the two entities there is a protocol of intentions, which also includes the common execution of activities to promote awareness, training and environmental education.

Thus throughout the year there will be informative talks with farmers about the use of the crusher and organic farming courses that, among other topics, will include the production of compost with pruning remains.

Among other aspects, the agreement addresses the proper management of agricultural waste and its reuse and deepening the functions of advice and training on good practices for the implementation of the climate change adaptation strategy of the municipality of Murcia.

The actions foreseen in the framework of this protocol are wide and diverse.

Thus, the promotion of the techniques and use of ecological cultivation and the strengthening of the municipal land bank system, as well as the promotion of the techniques of crushing the agricultural waste coming from pruning and its reuse are contemplated.

The collaboration between both parties also provides for advice and training on techniques and agricultural uses that respect the environment, as well as the recovery of traditional irrigation networks and the promotion of actions aimed at achieving a model of development of the Huerta de Murcia sustainable.

The areas of cooperation also reach the awarding of prizes and aid as a stimulus to good agricultural practices and social awareness about the measures contemplated in the climate change adaptation strategy of the City of Murcia.

Currently the farmers of the municipality can only perform agricultural burning from October to May as long as they have an authorization of plant health.

In addition, in episodes of contamination these actions are strictly prohibited.

For carrying out unauthorized burns, 74 disciplinary proceedings were opened in 2017;

in 2018, 110 and in 2019, 296.

Since 1982, ADEA-ASAJA has been working as the most representative agrarian professional organization and among its aims are the representation and defense of the interests of farmers, ranchers and agrarian companies, the training of entrepreneurs, agricultural professionals and their employees, the processing of grants and subsidies. , negotiation of the collective agreement for agricultural, forestry and livestock work, participation in tables and representation forums at regional, national and European level, legal assistance to its members and the provision of all the necessary services for the socioeconomic development of its associates and the regional agri-food sector.
