The University of Murcia and Aspanpal come together to teach their own sign language studies (19/07/2019)

The University of Murcia and the Association of Parents of Children with Hearing and Language Problems (Aspanpal) signed on Friday a collaboration agreement that will allow the UMU to provide their own studies for sign language training with the collaboration of the association.

The agreement has been signed by the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, and Antonio Serrano, president of Aspanpal, in an act that took place in the Convalecencia, headquarters of the Rectorate.

The Vice Chancellor of Studies, Sonia Madrid, explained that this agreement culminates a close collaboration with Aspanpal that began in 1997 with an agreement that allowed the practice of UMU students in the association and that has been advancing with agreements for professionals of the institution can develop research projects in the field related to hearing and language problems.

This new step assumes that Aspanpal will be an external promoter of its own studies that have to do with sign language training.

"These courses will be designed according to the needs of Aspanpal, which will have facilities and the collaboration of UMU professionals specialized in sign language, these courses will have the seal of the University of Murcia and quality assurance", explained Madrid .

"For Aspanpal to have a better training in sign language interpreters is to ensure the preparation of more and better interpreters that allow our children to have access to all kinds of activities without limitations," said Antonio Serrano.

For his part, the Rector Luján has been very satisfied with the formalization of this agreement and has highlighted "the UMU's awareness and willingness to be a reference in inclusion".

Luján recalled that the University of Murcia is the Spanish university with the largest number of people with disabilities, both among its students and staff.
