Strength training increases muscle mass and functional capacity of the elderly, in only 12 weeks (04/07/2019)

Scientific Reports magazine, of the prestigious Nature group, publishes the study of the research group of the UCAM "GISAFFCOM", which has allowed 45 elderly people to reduce the levels of fat mass, as well as increase muscle mass, strength and ability functional, among other parameters, in only twelve weeks of training.

This will also help other European research on healthy aging, which also leads the UCAM, to prevent sarcopenia, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol or some types of cancer.

The results of the study 'Effects of a moderate-to-high intensity resistance circuit training on fat mass, functional capacity, muscular strength, and quality of life in elderly: A randomized controlled trial', carried out by researchers of the Faculty of Sport of the UCAM, indicate how after twelve weeks of training with people aged between 65 and 75 years, improvements in their functional capacity, body composition and strength have been detected, which will impact on the improvement of their daily life and have an aging healthier.

Dr. Pablo Jorge Marcos-Pardo, principal investigator of the Group of Research in Health, Physical Activity, Fitness and Motor Behavior "GISAFFCOM", has emphasized that strength training in circuit with moderate to high loads is a necessary program in people over 65 years, since it generates improvements in parameters of health and physical performance, prolonging aging with functional independence and health.

This helps the elderly to live independently and determines even where they will live, depending on whether or not they need care and what kind.

Of course, the elderly must do physical exercise under the supervision and direction of a Physical-Sports Educator, who is a graduate in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, who will design the best program, adapted to their medical and physical background. sports and at their level, Marcos-Pardo has pointed out.

The data collected will also help other research in the field of healthy aging, such as the European project "Promoting the sedentary shift LIFestye towards active AGEing-LIFEAGE", also led by the UCAM, in which the same research group, together with partners from Italy, Finland, Latvia and Ireland, aim to prevent a sedentary lifestyle in adults and the elderly and the emergence of diseases such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol or some types of cancer by promoting healthy habits, including of exercise directed by physical-sport educators and education for active aging.
