20 years of the 'Three Cultures' (02/05/2019)

Music, dance, theater, lectures, literature and cinema will flood the city from May 10 to 25, with proposals of Sephardic culture, sacred melodies and Gregorian chants, flamenco-andalusí, popular music from Murcia, Balkan rhythms, jazz and gospel, among others

140 artists from 14 countries will meet in a score of squares and public spaces in the city, as an expression of tolerance among peoples through art.

The Festival of the Three Cultures will be on Saturday, May 25 with shows in Alfonso X, Liberty Avenue, Plaza de Europa and Cardinal Belluga, where Farruquito will close the festival with his show 'Improvisao'.

The festival 'Murcia Tres Culturas' celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to celebrate the Murcia City Council has organized a comprehensive program of international events of first level, all open and free, which will be developed in the main public spaces of the city from May 10 to 25, with the presence of 140 artists from 14 countries.

Music, theater, colloquiums, conferences, literature, cinematographic projections and dance make up this contest for tolerance and respect among peoples through art, "which marks its 20th edition as a cultural reference in the Spanish Mediterranean," said the Mayor José Ballesta, in the presentation of the program and the poster of the festival, by Araceli Reverte, which reflects the trees of the three cultures: palm tree, olive tree and cypress tree.

"Murcia are generous and open, and our biggest difference is that we are not different from anyone.

Murcia is - by vocation, tradition and history - an example of plurality and coexistence since Christians, Jews and Muslims coexisted peacefully under the reign of Alfonso X El Sabio.

And this cultural enrichment is what spreads this Festival, through a universal language such as art, "said José Ballesta.

Musicians, singers and dancers from different countries, such as Spain, Morocco, Greece, France, Italy, Holland, USA, Argentina, Israel, Belgium, Portugal, Canada, Iraq and Algeria will take the squares and streets of Murcia.

"It is a great event with tolerance and miscegenation, in which the coexistence of music of different styles and traditions will turn the heart of the city of Murcia into an explosion of rhythms, cultures and sensibilities," the mayor said.

Melodies from different continents in twenty locations

There will be melodies from different continents, with proposals of Sephardic music, jazz, sacred melodies and Gregorian chants, flamenco-Andalusian, popular music from Murcia, Balkan rhythms, Israel-US fusion, gospel and flamenco, among others.

Concerts and cultural activities will take place in Plaza Belluga, Plaza de los Apóstoles, Church of San Bartolomé, Las Claras Museum, Carmen Church, Bridge of Dangers, Molinos del Río, La Merced Church, La Merced Cloister, Church of San Miguel, Plaza de Europa, Alfonso X Avenue, Liberty Avenue, Puertas de Castilla Cultural Center, Culture Hall of the Cajamurcia Foundation, Assembly Hall of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Murcia.

The Mediterranean, bridge of cultures

The programming of music and dance of the XX edition of the festival has as clear objectives the promotion of tolerance, coexistence and respect between artists of different cultural or religious origin, without forgetting that thread, that nexus of union, that cultural amalgam which is the Mediterranean as a bridge of cultures.

The cultures of the different shores of the Mediterranean, spirituality and mysticism, proposals of coexistence and artistic dialogue between cultures and beliefs, the average age in Spain, the children's audience and the celebration of tolerance are present in the programming.

City Day

In this edition, will be recalled the constitution of the Council of Murcia during the delivery of the honors of Favorite Children of Murcia that makes the City on the occasion of City Day, next May 12, which will be the group Azarbe, with music themes from our Region that tell us about our traditions.

International groups

The proposals made around cultural diversity stand out, such as the Eleftheria Arvanitaki & Band shows from Greece, with their wonderful voice and Mediterranean music;

Youssef El Houssanine (Arab Flemish fusion);

Osama Abdulrasol, from Israel;

Artefactum;

Al Mutamid;

Emma Lamdji & Heavenly Praise, the gospel sensation of southern Europe;

Cuartetoukan and Farruquito.

Murcia artistic proposal

Protagonists will also be the artistic proposals of the creators and artists from Murcia: La Morada Theater, Coral Discantus, Demusica Ensemble, Auroros, Victoria Cava, Periferia Teatro ...

On Friday, May 17, the Brotherhood of the Blessed Souls of Patiño, which will take a tour of the niches and altars of Murcia, taking the popular religiosity of the Huerta de Murcia to different points of the city.

During the show you will be able to know all the songs and popular styles that exist in the Huerta de Murcia, salves in their different styles, "loose" dances or "agarraos", as well as the popular organology of the Brotherhood (guitars, guitars, violins, lutes, inserts, tambourines, etc.) and the symbolic elements of the feast of the innocents, through their skull hats characteristic of Patiño.

Festival of the Three Cultures: 24 hours of artistic proposals

There are also artistic proposals aimed at children and family and those that make up the Festival of Three Cultures, which will take place on Saturday May 25, during which more than 24 hours can be enjoyed different types of proposals by the whole city.

Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio will host, from 12.30 to 2.30 pm, the performances of the Al Maqam groups, with an Andalusian romacero, and Al Mawror, with songs and dances from the old Sephardic Jews.

On Avenida Libertad will be present, from 19.30, the Murcian company of Puppets Periferia Teatro, with a show for the whole family.

At the Plaza de Europa, the Israeli group Quartetoukan Ensemble will perform at 20:30.

At night, at 22:00, the Belluga Square will host the closing of the festival with the presence of Farruquito and his show 'Improvisao', which reflects, through dance and music, the truth and the roots of flamenco at its most high level;

an artistic expression that comes from the mixture of many cultures (Arabic, Jewish, Castilian, the gypsies - arrived in Spain in the fifteenth century and the Andalusian).

In short, proposals from different cultures, proposals of miscegenation and diversity, fusion of musical styles that make possible the mixing, coexistence and dialogue of artists from diverse backgrounds through the fusion of languages ​​through the diversity of sounds, sometimes antagonistic that give meaning to tolerance and universality through music.
