The paratroopers of the Infantry Regiment'Zaragoza'5 receive the national flag in Belluga (30/03/2019)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today delivered the national flag to the 'Zaragoza' Infantry Regiment No. 5 of paratroopers in the Belluga square, where a military parade took place on the occasion of the distinction granted to this unit created in 2016 and Based in the Santa Bárbara barracks, located in the Murcia hamlet of Javalí Nuevo.

The act was chaired by the Lieutenant General, Chief of the Land Force of the Army, Juan Gómez de Salazar Mínguez, acting as Madrina the director of the Symphony Orchestra of the Region of Murcia, Virginia Martínez Fernández.

The delivery of the national flag to the aforementioned Unit, which by Ministerial Order 7/2018 of February 5 grants the Regiment the use of the National Teaching in its Flag modality, consolidates the great step that the Parachute Brigade took with the creation of the Regiment in its transformation process, to adapt to the new organic, organic Army that has turned it into a versatile unit with greater capacity, but without losing its essence.

The reorganization of the Parachute Brigade began on January 1, 2016, with the creation of the Infantry Regiment 'Naples' No. 4, where the flags 'Roger de Flor' and 'Roger de Lauria' were integrated.

On July 1, 2016, the 'Zaragoza' Infantry Regiment No. 5 was created. With this milestone, the Army points out that "it complies with the history of one of its Heroic Tercios, which allows us to evoke the glory and the traditions of the Spanish Infantry and recover the name of one of the oldest units and which was given the name of 'El Glorioso' ".

Symbolism

The Regiment inherits this jewel of the Spanish infantry, joining the History of Parachute Units of the Army.

The shield that today looks its standard, and that was delivered by the Chief of Staff of the Army on October 5, 2016, is full of symbolism.

In it, the parachute is first presented, a fundamental element of the Unit and which today replaces those ships that took him to distant and glorious military campaigns.

It incorporates the Lion, symbol of the city that gives it its name and finally the trangles with the colors of the Crown of Aragon and that evoke the Almogávar spirit.

The Zaragoza Regiment, which is constituted in the 21st century, also evokes the almogávar spirit of the Crown of Aragon.

That spirit is totally rooted in the tradition and symbolism of the Parachute Brigade and its units.

The Regiment incorporates new vehicles in two phases, in the first arrival of the BMR and in the following it is expected that these will be replaced by the new 8x8 vehicles.

A history that dates back to the year 1579

The old Regiment 'Zaragoza', from which they took his name, was born in 1579 as Tercio de Lisboa, as his first mission was the capture of the Portuguese capital to guarantee the dynastic rights of Philip II over Portugal.

Years later, prior to the War of Independence, the unit was reorganized in the Aragonese capital, where its City Council paid the expenses to put it on the war footing, hence its name of Zaragoza.

Form in its rows the III Flag 'Ortiz de Zarate', created in the year 1960 and that receives the name in memory of Lieutenant Ortiz de Zarate, died in combat the 26 of November of 1957 during the campaign of IFNI.

Throughout its history, its Screenplay has been distinguished with various military ties for its outstanding performances in the campaign of the Sahara and Operations in Bosnia Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan, scenario in which it has deployed up to four times, Iraq and Mali .

For his outstanding performance in them, he has received up to fifteen Cruces to the Military Merit with Red Distinction.
