Huermur denounces the poor condition of the medieval wall of Murcia (14/03/2019)

The collective demands an urgent special plan to enhance, rehabilitate and consolidate this defensive structure that was key in the history of Murcia during the centuries of expansion of the city and the orchard.

Huermur criticizes the City of Murcia for the lack of maintenance of the wall, as it is full of garbage, painted, and even cracks.

Being a monument declared of Cultural Interest, BIC will request the corresponding measures to ensure its protection and safeguard.

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and the Heritage of Murcia (Huermur) denounces the poor condition of the three stretches of medieval wall of the twelfth century, which exist in the open from the central Plaza de la Glorieta to the well-known Sagasta street in the center historical-artistic of Murcia.

Huermur has been able to see how this monument, which holds the status of Cultural Interest BIC, maximum protection granted by the Cultural Heritage Act, is in a sorry state of conservation, full of garbage, paint, brush, and even worrisome cracks .

Reaching the point of having to notify the Murcia City Council Cleaning Service yesterday afternoon to remove the waste that had accumulated in the wall enclosure next to the Plaza de Abastos de Verónicas.

The conservationist collective has filed the corresponding complaint with the Directorate General of Cultural Property of the Ministry of Culture to take the necessary measures to ensure the good condition and image of this important medieval monument of Murcia.

In the same sense, it asks both the Consistory of the capital and Culture to prepare a Special Plan that establishes protocols of adequate maintenance and a real and effective value, without further announcements, advertisements or promises that are not fulfilled.

Huermur recalls that since August of last year is waiting for the City of Murcia to deliver a copy of the "protocol for maintenance, restoration and conservation of archaeological remains with which the City of Murcia has," after learning of its possible existence after statements of the mayor of Education and Heritage.

But today no leader of the City has deigned to send us the copy to know what actions and measures are made with the archaeological heritage of our city, point from Huermur, although seen the current state of our heritage, it seems that " protocol "serves as little good.

This has been remarked by the President of Huermur, Sergio Pacheco, noting that: "It is outrageous that the cultural legacy of our ancestors to present this deplorable state of conservation, and an image that is not consistent with the historical and cultural heritage of the seventh capital of the country.

We will not tire of demanding that the public authorities return to our history the importance it deserves, starting with keeping the monuments of our land clean, protected and cared for ".

The hermitage of Pilar in a shameful state

In the same sense, Huermur remembers that especially significant is the stretch of medieval wall that runs along the facade of the historic hermitage of Pilar, in one of the oldest corners of the city.

This hermitage, built at the end of the 17th century by order of the City Mayor Francisco Miguel de Pueyo and rebuilt in the nineteenth century, presents today an infinity of damage, dirt, paint and a deplorable image.

Therefore, Huermur will demand both the City of Murcia as owner of the central hermitage, and the Ministry of Culture immediate measures to return to this historical heritage its due dignity, and thus fulfill the mandates of the Law of Heritage.
