Nacho Tornel, councilman of Cambiemos Murcia, will present a motion to the plenary next Thursday with the aim of the City Council providing enough staff to the Municipal Archive so that specialized technicians can prioritize the work of conservation, archiving and research, since without a own service manager (currently dependent on the head of the Culture Service) and without an archivist, they have to assume administrative functions.
In addition, the municipal training will ask that this institution be given a space appropriate to their needs.
Both the headquarters of the Almudí Palace, reformed in 1986 and which holds 10,000 files, such as Mayayo, with 30,000, "do not end up being completely adapted to their function, which causes that an important part of the research material has no way out" .
In this sense, for Tornel, "we must take into account how difficult it is to adapt and refurbish any building to the new requirements of a file, which includes, for example, a complex air conditioning system, so it should not be ruled out the construction of a new property for its specific use ".
The Municipal Archive of Murcia, "among many other jewels", preserves the largest series of uninterrupted capitular acts of all the municipalities of the Crown of Castile (1364), which makes it the most complete of the existing in this area.
"Linked to the foundation of the City Council by Alfonso X el Sabio, since 1266 this institution has been a unit that has fulfilled in an impeccable manner with its function," added the mayor.
As explained from Cambiemos Murcia, the mere operation of a 21st century archive involves tasks such as updating databases, digitizing new and old works, consultation and advice in the room and at a distance, the reproduction of documents, the loan , guided tours or the maintenance of an easy to use website, so it is essential to have sufficient staff and adequate facilities.
