XXIV Jornadas Murcianas sobre Hipertensión Arterial (30/11/2018)

José Abellán, director of the Chair of Cardiovascular Risk of the UCAM and president of the Murcian Society of Arterial Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk in the XXIV Jornadas Murcianas sobre Hipertensión Arterial

The first cause of death in Spain, according to recent studies, are cardiovascular diseases, above cancer mortality.

"And in the Region of Murcia, too, where the most striking thing is that it maintains rates, despite being a Mediterranean community, very high rates of ischemic heart disease and above all stroke mortality.In women, the first cause is stroke" , has indicated José Abellán, director of the Chair of Cardiovascular Risk of the UCAM and president of the Murcian Society of Arterial Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk, organizer of the event.

In this regard, it has affected that this puts the company on notice, which should monitor the factors that lead to this development of excess mortality.

"The most related is high blood pressure, which alerts us to the importance of strict control to avoid complications."

Longer-lived

The fact of living more and more years also has an impact on the increase of these diseases, since "the burden of cardiovascular diseases is a function of the time of exposure to cardiovascular risk factors, for example smoking", said the Dr. Abellán, who added that the fact that there are now more women smokers than before implies that in the medium term the development of cardiovascular complications is increasing in this sector.

Educate to prevent

The key is education, and this is how the UCAM professor shows the importance of primary prevention in children and adolescents.

He stressed that there are two important aspects: genetics, which "fortunately transmits very high HDL rates, compared to other Mediterranean populations, a genetics that protects us in a certain way";

and the exposure to environmental factors, "the one that we have more sedentary lifestyle, consumption of saturated fats, obesity, smoking ... significantly deteriorates our arteries" and carries all the rates indicated.
