The University of Murcia addresses the situation and the rights of children in a few days (29/11/2018)

The University of Murcia has released the report 'Situation of Children in the Murcia Region 2017' within the framework of the 'XIII Conference on Children's Rights' that have taken place this week in the Faculty of Education.

The report, carried out by the UNICEF Murcia Committee in collaboration with the University of Murcia and the Polytechnic of Cartagena, was presented by Francisco Javier Martínez, Vice-rector of Quality, Culture and Communication, and by the research team that carried out the work.

According to the data collected in the same, four out of ten children living in the Region of Murcia are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

This is 39.3% of the total child population, according to the AROPE indicator for 2016. We are talking about more than 120,000 children who live in situations of vulnerability or exclusion;

figures higher than the national average (32.9%) and the European Union (26.9% in 2015).

The objective of this first report of the Committee of Murcia is not only to provide an overview of the situation of children and adolescents in the Region, to contribute to a better understanding of their reality, but to try to advance in the improvement of welfare indicators child care, and offer an agenda with recommendations and proposals to promote and improve their welfare.

In addition, the document highlights the need and urgency to protect, prioritize and make visible the investment in childhood, in order to guarantee child welfare, especially in the areas with the greatest challenges: fight against poverty, health, education and protection, putting children at the center of childhood policies.

The day ended with a presentation session of a panel of experiences of representatives of entities that develop volunteer projects with children and adolescents in the Region of Murcia, managed by the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteering of the UMU.
