The performance will benefit the Board of Landowners of the Huerta de Murcia, which brings together more than 20,000 villagers and 8,000 hectares

A game of 91,299 euros, derived from the participatory budgets of 2018, will improve the masonry walls and thus preserve the irrigation ditches of traditional Murcia.

The regional government will grant to the Board of Landowners of the Huerta de Murcia, which brings together more than 20,000 villagers and 8,000 hectares, 40 percent of the total budget, amounting to 228,247 euros.

These works are being carried out in the two largest ditches that form the backbone of the traditional irrigation network of the Huerta de Murcia, the Acequia de Barreras and the Aljufía.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, visited today the first of them with the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta.

Specifically, the section of the Path of the Partidores, on whose right margin is being executed a masonry wall of 100 meters in length.

To this end, hydraulic masonry walls are also being built on the right bank of Camino Hondo and 20 elm trees are being planted in the previous section.

The Acequia de Barreras has 22.5 kilometers of route and supplies water to the entire Greater South Inheritance.

The canalization runs through the urban centers of Javalí Nuevo, Alcantarilla, Murcia, Puebla de Soto, La Raya, Nonduermas, Aljucer, Beniaján, Torreagüera and Alquerías.

In Acequia de Aljufía, the wall with the same characteristics as that of Barreras has already been restored.

With 27 kilometers in length, it supplies the Northern Major Inheritance and runs through Javalí Viejo, La Ñora, Rincón de Beniscornia, Guadalupe, La Albatalía, La Arboleja and Murcia.

Del Amor nuanced that "these spaces can not survive without irrigation networks".

Therefore, he continued, "it is necessary to carry out measures to preserve and ensure that this valuable heritage is properly appreciated by the citizens, without forgetting the importance of optimizing the use of water for our region."
