The ditches of Barreras and Aljufía continue to bring water to the Huerta de Murcia ten centuries later (26/11/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Ángel del Amor, and the president of the Junta de Hacendados, Diego Frutos, visited today the improvement works that have been carried out in the ditches of Barreras and Aljufía, which vertebran the traditional irrigation in the Huerta de Murcia and that benefit the 20,400 irrigators that brings together the Board of Hacendados de la Huerta and that cultivate an area of ​​8,000 hectares.

José Ballesta stressed that "this channel of Barriers, with more than 20 km in length, irrigates all the inheritance of the southern area of ​​the Huerta de Murcia, while that of Aljufía supplies to the north.

These major ditches are the most impressive hydraulic engineering project that exists, with more than a thousand years old (its origin dates back to the tenth century), and still continue to operate throughout the Huerta de Murcia ".

Specifically in the Barrier ditch, in the section of the Path of the Partidores, a masonry wall of 100 meters in length has been executed in the right margin.

Hydraulic masonry walls have also been incorporated on the right bank of the Camino Hondo, and twenty elm trees will be planted in the previous section.

The mayor thanked the regional government and the Junta de Hacendados for this performance, "carried out respecting the environmental and historical criteria", and funded by both institutions and stressed that "the City Council, through the Plan of Action of the Huerta de Murcia, has been promoting the recovery of our heritage and is currently working on the recovery of three mills: the one of La Pólvora, del Amor and Batán, and other historical environments such as the Palm Grove of Santiago and Zaraiche have been recovered ".

The Barreras ditch has 22 kilometers and a half of travel and supplies water to the entire Greater South Inheritance.

The canalization runs through the urban centers of Javalí Nuevo, Alcantarilla, Murcia, Puebla de Soto, La Raya, Nonduermas, Aljucer, Beniaján, Torreagüera and Alquerías.

The actions in Acequia de Aljufía include the restitution of a wall with the same characteristics as that of Barreras.

It will be carried out in several sections, downstream of the Molino de los Casianos, which means a length of 100 meters.

This ditch, with 27 kilometers in length, supplies the Northern Major Inheritance and runs through Jabalí Viejo, La Ñora, Rincón de Beniscornia, Guadalupe, La Albatalía, La Arboleja and Murcia.
