Palliative Care, the most humane way to die (15/11/2018)

The Catholic University of Murcia has carried out the second and last day of the International Congress of Palliative Care, under the motto 'Frailty makes us strong'.

The closing of the congress has been marked by the awareness of the need for this type of medicine in terminal patients.

Throughout the morning, different professionals from the field of health have participated, who have exposed both their projects and their vision about the importance of training professionals in this field of health.

Manuel Pardo, co-founder of the Ambulancia del Deseo Foundation and vice-dean of the Degree in Podiatry at the UCAM, commented on the operation of the foundation.

"This is an initiative to help people who have an advanced disease or mobility problems to fulfill a wish."

During his speech, he highlighted the satisfaction that each member of the organization experiences every time they help to fulfill the desire of the people who write to them.

In addition, he added that "the wishes are free to help people altruistically."

The Congress has also had the intervention of professionals from pediatrics, a specialty of health that claims the need for palliative medicine in children.

"Children in medicine are always the forgotten ones," explained Álvaro Navarro, deputy physician at the Niño Jesús Hospital in Madrid.

In addition, a round table has been held in which the human perspective of the end of life has been treated through different testimonies.

María Dolores García, patron of the San Antonio University Foundation, commented that "our societies are the advanced ones, those that think about euthanasia for the elderly and that is an outrage".

On the other hand, Fernando Carmona, doctor of Palliative Care of the Puerta del Mar Hospital (Cádiz), has assured that "one should bet on palliative care as the most humane way of dying".

Ana Maria Navarro, doctor of the Palliative Care Home Team of the Murcian Health Service in Area VII, also argued that "palliative medicine is a bioethical response to the needs of the terminally ill patient".

The International Congress of Palliative Care, held at the Campus of Los Jerónimos, has concluded with this morning session.
