MasterChem arrives, the contest of the UMU that will fight the chemotherapy (13/11/2018)

The University of Murcia (UMU), through its Unit of Scientific Culture, launches the first edition of MasterChem, a contest that, imitating the successful culinary program, will encourage the scientific vocations of the students of the Region of Murcia.

On this occasion, participants will not receive food or kitchen utensils.

Instead, they will have chemical products and laboratory instruments with which they will have to enhance their creativity and skills to win in the grand finale.

Although the students will have been previously prepared in the classroom, they will not know their work tools until the test begins.

This innovative initiative is aimed at students throughout the region, aged between 6 and 18 years, who will have to fight side by side with their teachers to reach the final gala, which will take place at the end of March.

From today until December 6th at 8:00 p.m. all the teachers of the primary, secondary and baccalaureate centers who wish to participate will have to send a short video (between two and four minutes in mp4 format and maximum size 10MB) showing your best experiment to the mail ucc@um.es.

After the deadline, the selected teams will be known, and work will begin on teacher training.

Teachers will have a special role in MasterChem.

They will be responsible for getting the registration and guiding the students to the final stage.

In return, those selected will receive training from UMU experts when developing the experiments and training their students.

Through this project we want to encourage the chemical vocations of Murcian students and demonstrate the presence of this science in our day to day.

An opportunity that can become the first contact of students directly with this science.

As a contest, another of MasterChem's objectives is to alleviate the chemophobia that has been present in recent years in the form of pseudoscience.

This scientific contest, promoted by the Scientific Culture Unit of the University of Murcia, has been funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

In addition, it has the collaboration of other institutions such as the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry through its territorial section of the Region of Murcia, the Faculty of Chemistry and companies such as Tecnoquim SL
