The Post Office opens its doors as a new tourist and gastronomic focus in Murcia (13/11/2018)

Today the 15 gastronomic stops that this emblematic building has been inaugurated have been inaugurated, which has been restored respecting its original elements and structure.

The Post Office Market is now a reality, after the inauguration of the new 3,000 m2 space in the center of Murcia, which offers 15 gastronomic stops and generates 100 direct jobs and more than 150 indirect jobs;

an event that was attended by the president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, and the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta.

In his speech, José Ballesta said that "today is a historic day for Murcia, since it opens to all Murcia this property designed and built between 1930 and 1931 by Pedro Muguruza, as a must-see in the capital of the Region , an initiative that is part of the process of transformation of the city, and which is an important stimulus for tourism and economic activity in the municipality. "

This new leisure and gastronomy space, promoted by Lonja de Murcia and Grupo Orenes, has opened its doors with a unique offer that complements the options currently offered by the city of Murcia.

In total, more than 3,000 square meters whose goal is to be a permanent showcase of culinary culture and activity in the Region of Murcia and Spain, using a model that is successfully developed in other major cities of the country and the world.

The building that houses it, built between 1930 and 1931 and which was the headquarters of the post office in the city until the late 80's, has been completely renovated respecting its structure, its facade and recovering many original elements.

The main activity of the gastronomic market will be developed on the ground floor.

Around a central staircase, imperial style and whose feet are located a semicircular central bar that acts as the axis of the entire space, are located 16 stops or posts.

Of these, twelve are destined to different types of food, while the rest will be for drinks (beer, more than 100 references of wine, vermouth and coffee).

The basement is intended for all auxiliary services for the proper functioning of the gastro market, while the two upper floors will be used for the organization of cultural or social events, as well as for the celebration of all kinds of events.

In addition, the Post Office will have two terraces, one in height and another at street level.

The latter, which will be covered and has its own name: El Invernadero.

It is a space of consumption focused on cocktails that will see the light within a short time.

Currently, this area has fulfilled the functions of stockpiling necessary for the proper functioning of the work.

In a month will begin the assembly of the structure that will allow its air conditioning both in summer and winter.

Tourist attraction

The opening ceremony, which included the opening of an envelope in a gesture to the original use of the building, was also attended by the CEO of Grupo Orenes, Javier López Cerrón, and the general director of the Post Office, Miguel Pichardo .

"We finished the 50th anniversary of our inauguration, after months of hard work, an emblematic work that, like Grupo Orenes, has a history linked to this city.

A building that has witnessed its transformation, and which will also be the protagonist of a splendid future, of a future that we are going to build and travel together ", explained Javier López Cerrón, CEO of Grupo Orenes.

For his part, Miguel Pichardo, general director of the Post Office, said that "we make available to the entire city an offer totally complementary to what already exists in the city and that will become a dynamic element of all the zone.

In addition, it will be a powerful tourist attraction that, as it happens in other places, that broadens the offer that both the city and the Region can offer the visitor ".

Its start-up, in which more than 3 million euros have been invested, means the creation of 100 direct and more than 150 indirect jobs and an estimated influx of more than 400,000 people per year, which will make it in one of the places with the greatest influx of the city.

With these figures, an economic impact between 5 and 8 million euros will be generated.

Architectural project and decoration

Rafael Zamorano, of Arquermo, architect responsible for the project, explains that the priority has always been to preserve the building, "focusing the remodeling on the original structure both on the exterior facade and on the interior layout.

In the same way, the organization and internal structural function prevails.

Everything revolves around its central courtyard between pillars, although its counter to the public of the old post office are now posts that offer the best cuisine.

For its part, the interior decoration, made by Cousi Interiorismo, has managed to combine the latest trends with the uniqueness of a building steeped in history.

Its managers, Alicia Martín and Alba Hurlé indicate that "the Post Office Market is designed to preserve the lines of architectural design and original materials.

We introduce bright colors in the carpentry to provide a cooler environment that contrasts with the dark woods of modernist details such as the central bar and some lamps.

In turn, all underlined by modern elements that surprise as the unusual red entrance and a great neon on a tropical paper ".

Gastronomic offer

The gastronomic offer offered by the Post Office Market consists of 16 posts:

'La Estafeta': the sweet area of ​​the market.

It offers recipes for French pastries, chocolate, a large selection of coffees, ice cream and freshly made artisan pastry.

'La Cocina de la Abuela': specializing in home-made empanadas of homemade dough with a large assortment of fillings.

This place also has the usual omelette and a variety of homemade croquettes.

'La del pulpo': with this product as the undisputed protagonist.

It will be offered from its classic version, grilled, in stews or with surprising new flavors.

'La bomba': a rice dish with different recipes, always made with products from the Murcian garden and the Mediterranean coast as characteristic as the cauldron.

'Open me a lot': charcoal coals for fish cooked in a spit, all kinds of seafood from the Mediterranean, traditional cuts of first quality meat and other specials such as the Brazilian picaña.

'Moshi moshi', Japanese food adapted to the gastronomic market concept.
