The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, received this morning the final execution project of 'Rehabilitation and putting into use of Phase I of the former provincial prison of Murcia ', from the architects whose project was the winner in the public contest of ideas, Manuel Hernández and José Ibáñez, from IH Arquitectos.
This step gives an important boost to the rehabilitation of the Old Prison, a building that has been closed for 37 years, classified as a Singular Element and which was built at the beginning of the 20th century.
José Ballesta, who directly coordinates the city's strategic projects, highlighted the "high social profitability" of this action, since "it will allow Murcia to return part of its heritage converted into a new bright, open and participatory meeting point, which will remain open to all and will house permanent activity, without physical, hourly or generational barriers ".
Phase I of the project includes the rehabilitation of the head building or main access, located between the Plaza Circular and Primo de Rivera, and its surroundings, with landscaped areas and new pedestrian accesses from different sides of the building.
The head office building has a total constructed area of 1,322 m2.
The final project maintains the current facades and also includes the maintenance and restoration of the old watch towers of the perimeter corridors.
With respect to the roofs of the building, the overhead light will be sought by means of two triangular skylights to the façade of Primo de Rivera Avenue, among other actions.
