Murcia City Council organizes the IV InterVegas National Meeting in defense of historical agrarian territories and fertile soils (24/10/2018)

The InterVegas Federation, Huerta Viva and the Murcia City Council will present the legislative proposal 'InterVegas Strategy 2015-2031: for the protection and dynamization of the fertile and productive land territories of the Spanish State' Antonio Navarro: "We will deal with special attention to education as a fundamental pillar to transmit the agrarian culture, in addition, we will also address the problem of water in traditional irrigation "

The Huerta Viva Association, on behalf of the InterVegas Federation, with the collaboration of the Department of Urbanism, Environment, Water and Vegetable Garden of the City of Murcia, has organized the IV InterVegas Es-Tatal Meeting to be held in Murcia this Friday and Saturday in the auditorium of the City of Murcia and in the IES Licensed Francisco Cascales thanks to the agreement signed with this association

This meeting is part of the InterVegas Strategy 2015-2031 established in the Pact that was approved in 2015 in Granada, whereby the commitment of defense, revitalization and recovery of the historic agrarian territories and the fertile and productive soils is acquired, from the principles of food sovereignty, environmental education and sustainability.

A large number of autonomous communities, municipalities, universities and social and educational movements have adhered to this pact during these three years.

"In this edition we will advance in the proposal of a state Law for the protection of soils of high agrological value, as well as in the strengthening of the local market as a key element in the promotion of vegetable gardens and dry land.

We will treat with special attention the education like fundamental pillar to value and to transmit the agrarian culture.

In addition, we will also address the problem of water in traditional irrigation, with an emphasis on the conservation of irrigation channels and their cultural, environmental and landscape values, in the face of the threat of "modernization", the transformation of large areas of dry land and forest. new irrigation and overexploitation of rivers and aquifers, "says Antonio Navarro, councilor for Urbanism, Environment, Water and Garden.

At the opening ceremony on Friday, the symbolic planting of a mulberry tree will be carried out as a bond of union and commitment for the defense of the historic agrarian territories.

Presentations and working groups are planned around the drafting and promotion of the proposed law, the problem of water, experiences or projects of the local market, agri-environmental education and food sovereignty, and a visit to the unique and ancient Murcian garden for know its irrigation network of Islamic origin, the landscape and various projects that empower it.

Throughout the meeting, representatives of the European Parliament and the Congress of Deputies will be presented with the legislative proposal "Strategy InterVegas 2015-2031: for the protection and dynamization of the territories of fertile and productive soil of the Spanish State", widely supported at an institutional and social level by the autonomous regions that make up the InterVegas Network.

The proposal has been prepared by social and political representatives of the seventeen autonomous communities, integrated in the Federation.

In the assembly to be held during the meeting will be approved its final draft to send to the Congress of Deputies, thus reaching the goal initiated in 2015 to get a law to address the problem of loss, deterioration and fragmentation of historical agrarian territories with high productive, cultural, environmental and landscape value.

Navarro concluded by informing that "from the City of Murcia has as priority objectives to recover the garden of our municipality, that's why we created the Plan of Action of the Huerta de Murcia.

Therefore, we will encourage all activities that have to do with training, awareness, studies and research aimed at preserving and disseminating the cultural values ​​and traditions of the Huerta de Murcia, as is the case of this meeting that Huerta Viva performs " .
