Study 'Water in the agricultural sector of the Region of Murcia' (04/10/2018)

A report prepared by the Cátedra UCAM Santander Entrepreneurship in the Agrifood Field shows that the real deficit of the Murcia Region is 303hm3 per year, since the sources of supply are: 227hm3 surface water, 133hm3 of the Tajo-Segura Transfer, 79 hm3 of desalination, 66 hm3 of purified water and 329hm3 of groundwater, of which 160 hm3 are non-renewable.

The report 'Water in the agricultural sector of the Region of Murcia', prepared from the Cátedra Entrepreneurship in the Agrifood Field UCAM Santander has been presented at the Campus of Los Jerónimos, in which the data on the resources of the basin, demanding surfaces, consumption and water deficit in the Region.

The director of the Chair, Antonio Cerdá, has presented the report, accompanied by José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM;

Miguel Ángel del Amor, Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries;

and Sonia Colomar, Commercial Director in Murcia of Banco Santander.

The event was attended by representatives of institutions, professional associations, agricultural organizations and companies in the sector.

Water deficit in the Region of Murcia

This study shows that the planted area of irrigation water in the Region of Murcia is 172,980 hectares-66% of the total of the Segura Basin-with a water demand of 997 hm3.

However, the average annual consumption is 854 hm3, which implies a deficit of 143hm3.

If we also consider that of the 329hm3 of groundwater used for irrigation, 160 hm3 are non-renewable resources, the real deficit of the Murcia Region is 303hm3.

Optimization of resources

Those responsible for the report point out that the Region stands out for its high production taking into account the water resources available to it, so they recognize that there is a correct use of available resources.

The Region of Murcia has sought systems to obtain and optimize water resources, which is why there is a firm commitment to water reuse and numerous purification installations have been put in place in recent decades.

The importance of the agri-food sector in the Region of Murcia is reflected by the contribution of 21.4% of its GDP, and 28.4% of the total of its employees.

This sector needs stability in order to have enough water supply and to program its productions that allow it to fulfill its commercial commitments.

Therefore, it is essential to ensure the resource, that it is economically viable and that it complies with the environmental requirements.

This implies using all the available water resources in an equitable, just and solidary manner.

This means not renouncing the current Tajo-Segura Transfer and continuing to demand new transfers from other basins in the future to guarantee in a definitive way the solution to our water deficit.
