The Government Team has doubled the budget to guarantee the dining room for 2,800 children this summer (20/08/2018)

Social Rights allocates more than 3.7 million euros to combat child poverty, including social emergency aid and food, support and educational reinforcement or leisure activities and free time, which benefit more than 10,000 children

'Before criticizing, now Murcia should support the 2018 budgets, which envisage a significant increase in the areas of Social Inclusion and Childhood, with a budget close to 4 million euros for, among other actions, increase even more the places of school canteen in summer and complementary aids for children of families without resources, "he adds.

The demonstrations of Now Murcia show that 'the problem that has always criticizing and never contributing is that when taking stock they find that they have not made constructive proposals', continues Ruiz, for whom' the fight against child poverty is a commitment of all political groups. '

This was agreed by the Plenary of 2016, which was met with the creation of a municipal table for the eradication of child poverty, with the participation of different entities and associations of the municipality, to address measures to alleviate child poverty during school holidays .

Guaranteed basic needs

The funds provided by the Department to combat child poverty amount to 3.7 million euros per year, among which are programs such as social emergency aid and food, support and educational reinforcement or leisure activities and free time, which add more of 10,000 beneficiaries.

"Our concern is to ensure that all the children of the municipality who are in a position of special vulnerability have their basic needs met, especially food, and that is what we are working on," says Conchita Ruiz.

Thus, if 172,000 euros were allocated in 2017 and 802 were minors who received aid for dining expenses because they could not access the resources with dining room enabled for the summer, this year an expenditure of € 381,436 has been approved to benefit to 1,842 minors.

Actions to combat child poverty also include leisure time and support for processes of educational reinforcement for minors and adolescents, in addition to the actions carried out by various organizations in the third sector that maintain collaboration agreements or receive specific subsidies for services municipal social initiatives for the development of specific actions and various projects aimed at the most vulnerable child population in the municipality.

3.2 M € of aid for social emergencies

On the other hand, economic aid of various kinds are directed directly to the coverage of the most basic needs that the families of these minors and themselves can have, which include from aid for the rental of the house, to guarantee their permanence in a home, to aid for basic food, in addition to other more specific concepts, such as school canteen aids or the provision of resources to ensure the nutrition of these children during the summer months.

The total financial aid for social emergencies that were processed during 2017 was 4,267, for a total amount of € 3,261,082, of which 3,259 were earmarked specifically for basic food, with a total amount of € 2,416,947. and another 19 to the attention of special needs of infantile feeding, with a total amount of 13.545 €.

As direct measures, the Department managed during the academic year 2016-2017 a total of € 331.109 in canteen aid for children with which they were developing social intervention work and had not been able to access the scholarships of the Ministry of Education, amount that the 2017-2018 academic year has increased to € 355,898, which has allowed 970 minors to access this resource.

Conchita Ruiz concludes that 'Now Murcia, instead of criticizing, should recognize the important work that is being done in attention to the childhood that has allowed the municipality to be incorporated into the Unicef ​​Network of Child Friendly Cities'.
