The recovery of the Mar Menor is possible (13/07/2018)

This morning, experts from the Region of Murcia in the agricultural and water sector, as well as representatives of agricultural organizations, producers, or the administration, attended this morning at UCAM the conference given by Raghavan Srinivasan, researcher in hydrological modeling to know solutions that are being applied in diverse places in the world to problems similar to those that exist in Mar Menor and Campo de Cartagena.

Raghavan Srinivasan, Extraordinary Professor in Hydrological Modeling and one of the world's foremost experts in predicting the effects of land use and management on sediment production and transport of pollutants, has insisted on the need to evaluate the effectiveness of different practices agriculture through modeling prior to decision-making.

In this sense, the professor of the University of Texas A & M, Raghavan Srinivasan, during the conference 'Analysis of Best Management Practices Implementation in Cedar Creek Watershed.

Differences and Similarities with Campo de Cartagena 'has explained how the application of the `SWAT' model has been the first step to solve the contamination problem in the Cedar Creek reservoir (Texas, USA), whose Quality Management Plan of the Water has reduced the total amount of phosphorus in the reservoir by 35% since 2000.

The American researcher and creator of the SWAT model, explained that this process of modeling and decision making on the Cedar Creek reservoir can be replicated under the specific conditions of the Campo de Cartagena and the Mar Menor, in order to know what measures are more efficient when it comes to reducing water pollution.

The event, organized by the Cátedra UCAM-Santander `Entrepreneurship in the agri-food sector 'with the collaboration of Fecoam, Proexport, Apoexpa, the National Center for Food and Preservation, CRI Fluid System and Santander, was attended by the General Director of the Environment and Mar Menor, Antonio Luengo;

the general director Del Agua, Sebastián Delgado, and the president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, Miguel Ángel Ródenas.

SWAT Model

To determine which agricultural measures were more appropriate to reduce water contamination of the Cedar Creek reservoir, the watershed was modeled to that reservoir using the SWAT methodology, the most widely used hydrological model worldwide, with more than one scientific article published in indexed journals. every day and absolutely contrasted by its application in more than 100 different countries.
